THE ABB FIA Formula E World Championship took to Marrakesh last week, with a first podium of the season for António Félix da Costa.

The 5th Marrakesh E-Prix took place last week on the Moulay El Hassan Circuit with hot and dry conditions. António Félix Da Costa and DS TECHEETAH proved to be suited for this track with a second position and a fourth for Jean-Éric Vergne.

Earlier in the day, DS TECHEETAH delivered a strong performance in qualifying. António Félix Da Costa clinched his first pole position of the season followed by Jean-Éric Vergne in 3rd at the wheel of their DS E-TENSE FE21.

Starting from pole position, António Félix Da Costa had a great performance, fighting from the front throughout the race to claim second place of the Marrakesh E-Prix. This podium is the first of the season for the Portuguese driver who is proving to be back to performing at his highest level.

Jean-Éric Vergne was third on the grid and had a good start maintaining his position. After an eventful race and a lot of overtaking JEV pushed to be back at the front in this very strategic race. At the chequered flag, he finished fourth and scored 12 precious points. He still stands second in the Drivers’ Championship with 128 points.

Thanks to both drivers, DS TECHEETAH scored 33 points this weekend and currently find themselves standing in second position of the Team’s Championship.

Thomas Chevaucher, DS Performance Director and DS TECHEETAH Team Principal:

“We scored a great 2nd position and 33 points for the team, but obviously we are disappointed to not have won this race. Our cars are performing, our drivers are fast and we score strong points at every race. We will keep working hard to convert this potential into victories. The titles are more than ever our main goal!”

Mark Preston, TECHEETAH CEO:

“Another hard-fought weekend with Antonio delivering his first pole for the season. With both drivers qualifying well and starting 1st and 3rd the race was setup for an exciting event. Both drivers did an amazing job to finish 2nd and 4th to keep both the drivers and team championship well.”

Antonio Felix da Costa, Formula E champion in 2020:

“It was a strong day, pole position and P2 in the race. The race was crazy! We were leading, then we lost it. We tried to have the right strategy but in the end we just missed a little bit to Edo (Mortara). I’m happy with that, first podium of the season, it came a little bit late, but we are building momentum and we are looking strong to finish the season on a high.”

Jean-Éric Vergne, Formula E champion in 2018 and 2019:

“Marrakesh is done, I finished P4. I was struggling a lot at the end with my battery temperature, so we need to understand what happened. The race was looking strong up to that point and it’s a shame, but the next two races are in New-York, I love this place so I can’t wait to arrive there to have a strong result.”

The next E-Prix will be held in New York on the 16th and 17th of July, for the 11th and 12th round of Season 8 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
